2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Overview and Current State of the Outbreak

In this first presentation of a five-part COVID-19 series, Dr. Prathit Kulkarni, M.D. and Dr. Robert Atmar, M.D. discuss the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kulkarni gives background information on the outbreak and discusses transmission dynamics and clinical characteristics and outcomes of this disease. Dr. Atmar discusses the virology of the infection, potential therapeutic options, and possible vaccine development. Both physicians answer remote audience questions at the end of the presentation.

After March 19th, Department of Medicine Grand Rounds will be temporarily suspended for at least one month.  We look forward to resuming when feasible.

Needs Statement

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of epidemic and pandemic in the context of the current worldwide outbreak of COVID-19.
  • Describe the clinical presentation and outcomes of COVID-19.
  • Describe current knowledge of community and nosocomial transmission of COVID-19, infection control considerations for suspected and confirmed case-patients, and current testing strategies.
