In this Department of Medicine Clinical Pathological Conference (CPC) session, Dr. Brandon Blau presents the case of a 43-year-old woman with multiple chronic illnesses who was seen in clinic due to worsening dyspnea, dry cough, and fatigue. Dr. Salman Ahmed serves as Case Discussant; Dr. Stephen Leinfelder serves as Radiology Discussant; Dr. Hanna Siatecka serves as Pathology Discussant; and Dr. Bryan Jiang serves as Expert Discussant.

Needs Statement

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Apply Bayesian reasoning as part of the diagnostic process.
  • Use a differential diagnosis approach when multiple potential etiologies are possible.
  • Synthesize disparate data into a coherent working diagnosis.
  • Perceive cognitive biases and errors in the diagnostic thought process.
