Needs Statement

General, plastic, thoracic, vascular, cardiothoracic, abdominal transplantation and surgical oncology physicians, residents, fellows and medical students need to be regularly updated on novel therapies, as well as advances in surgical care and clinical practices that will aid them in treating a variety of surgical procedures to increase the patient care experience and improve practice efficiency.

Objectives

"Residents as Educators"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits of teaching as a resident.
  • Review existing teaching methods.
  • Discuss how to start incorporating teaching into daily routines.

"Sailing: A Surgeon’s Perspective"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss key skills utilized in both sailing and surgery.
  • Explain innovations in sailing.
  • Discuss innovations in surgery.

"Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons: Applying U.S. Navy Seal Culture to Baylor College of Medicine"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Define non-technical skills for surgeons.
  • Describe U.S. Navy Seal culture and how can be applied to Baylor College of Medicine.
  • Discuss six tenants of “extreme ownership” and how they can relate to surgical practice.
