Critical Care Panel (June 9, 2021)

This Critical Care Panel, presented by the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery Grand Rounds Series, consists of four presentations followed by a panel discussion. The four presentations are: "Updated Definitions of Sepsis" by Louisa Chiu, M.D., FACS; "Advances in Sepsis Monitoring in the SICU" by Jeremy Ward, M.D., FACS; "Latest Vasopressor Strategies for Septic Shock" by Subhasis Chatterjee, M.D.; and "Sepsis and the COVID-19 Experience" by Robert Southard, M.D.

Needs Statement

General, plastic, thoracic, vascular, cardiothoracic, abdominal transplantation and surgical oncology physicians, residents, fellows and medical students need to be regularly updated on novel therapies, as well as advances in surgical care and clinical practices that will aid them in treating a variety of surgical procedures to increase the patient care experience and improve practice efficiency.

Objectives

"Updated Definitions of Sepsis"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Review the new definition and diagnostic criteria for sepsis.
  • Discuss the components of the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score.
  • Describe the mainstays of the sepsis bundles.

"Advances in Sepsis Monitoring in the SICU"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the limitations of central venous pressure in resuscitation.
  • Demonstrate greater understanding of the methods for assessing preload dependence.
  • Explain the utility of bedside ultrasound in resuscitation.

"Latest Vasopressor Strategies for Septic Shock"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Compare vasopressor dosages between different vasopressors.
  • Identify pharmacological adjuncts to mitigate vasoplegic shock.
  • Describe a rational escalation of vasopressors in septic shock.

"Sepsis and the COVID-19 Experience"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the systemic response to sepsis and COVID-19.
  • Identify the limitations of evidence-based practices related to sepsis and COVID-19.
  • Prepare for future unexpected challenges by applying knowledge gained from the pandemic.
